What the HELL is Makeup?

Updated: Feb 10, 2019

Makeup is taking over the world! On social media, television, reality shows, films, YouTube, etc. Makeup is majorly becoming one of the biggest show-stoppers on the planet! Some people love it and some people can't stand it, but honestly, makeup has been a part of our society for a very long time; which leads me to the topic, "What the HELL is Makeup?" What is it used for, and why do so many people use it? Why is makeup such a big part of our society? Well, these are very good questions. Why? Hmm.

So, of course, there is nothing new under the sun because makeup has been around for centuries. But, where did makeup start and how did it get to where it is today? Makeup made it's debut around the first Dynasty of Egypt (Africa 3000 BC). The first type of makeup was made from coal, and was worn as an eyeliner. This coal was used specifically for the eyes, with the Egyptians (Africans), favoring black, green, and white. The most used colors were black and white and they were made from carbon, lead sulfide or manganese oxide. The green color was made from malachite and other copper based materials. The eye make up has two bases, Udju, which is made of green ore copper, and malachite, made from Sinai. "Sinai was believed to be under the dominion of Hathor, who was an ancient goddess, epitomized by beauty, love, joy and women. She was often referred to as “lady of malachite.” MESDEMET, a grey ore of lead, was derived from stibnite or galena (lead sulphide). It was found around the Red Sea coast and was among the material brought back by Pharaoh Hathshepsuf, as a tribute paid by Asiatic nomads after he embarked on an expedition."-John Itebu

More makeup came of Egypt (Africa), including mascara, and foundation. As time went on, makeup had made it's way onto many platforms and faces. Makeup was common among men and women, but now, it is only more common amongst women. Many people have their own opinion of makeup, but for me, makeup can be used for many things. Before I was even interested in makeup, I was just a regular college student, majoring in Theatre. There were a couple of classes that changed my life! Which were, costuming, and of course, you guessed it, makeup! In makeup class, I learned the basics. While learning the basics, I fell in love with the art. In class, we had many fun projects, including gender switching, drag queen, skeleton, and more. My love for makeup kept growing even after graduating from college. I took it a little further, started teaching myself, and this helped me to become the makeup artist that I am today. To me, makeup is an art that can be used to express yourself. I believe that makeup has to be one of the best things on this planet, simply because in the beginning it had a purpose, and to this day, it still has a purpose.

People use makeup for many different things and that is perfectly fine. If you love that blue eye shadow because it makes your eyes pop, then wear it! If you like that bright pink lipstick, or have face marks that you want to cover, or even if you want to look brighter, HONEEEY, learn ways to adapt that to your color. Do it, if you love late night pop out glamorous looks or even if you just like something simple and natural, then just wear it, love it and own it! People have suffered cosmetically damaging events in their lives. Some have been badly burned, lost skin, hair, and eyebrows. It is nothing wrong with drawing them on or having them permanently applied. Makeup has been used in many more situations to uplift and enhance your confidence in yourself. Honestly, this is a great time to be apart of this growing industry and community.

So, WHAT THE HELL IS MAKEUP, you ask? Makeup is an art that use faces as platform to give people a chance to enhance your look, or simply take a chance to play around with something fun and creative. Just how a flower comes from a seed, the urge to create comes from inside of you. And to me, that is what the hell makeup is.\

i like the post but well this is a very opinion based article. the idea of makeup being art is very controversial many people wont agree with this but that's fine. the idea of just drawing or replacing what was given to you doesn't well sound right. you should love your body unconditionally but many young women are raised on the idea in order to look hot they need all these beauty products. it destroys there self-esteem. why waste millions on your body when u can spend nothing on loving your body just for what it is.

This was very informative! I knew make-up had roots in ancient Egypt, but, I did not know the contents of the make-up. Great blog, with great commentary, and great information. Keep it up!
